Lake Taupo Sightseeing (Southern End)Lake Taupo Fishing Charters offers you a unique opportunity to enjoy the stunning scenery with a leisurely cruise around the southern end of Lake Taupo New Zealand. We are located close to Turangi, our local township, and can either arrange to pick you up from your bed and breakfast, motel or hotel or meet you at our usual departure point the Tokaanu Marina. The beginnings of our Lake Taupo goes back at least 27,000 years when a huge eruption ejected an estimated 1,170 cubic kilometers of material and caused several hundred square kilometers of surrounding land to collapse and form the caldera The latest eruption occurred in 181 AD and was one of the most violent eruptions of the past 5000 years. It is estimated to have ejected 100 cubic kilometers of material during the eruption - 30 cubic kilometers was ejected in the space of just a few minutes. It was also believed the eruption column was 50 kilometers high, higher than the Mt St Helen's eruption of 1980. There have been no more eruptions since 181 AD From the boat we are able to view at very close range many of the bluffs and cliffs formed by these eruptions with the depth of water frequently being over 40 meters within a meter of the cliffs. There are many picturesque bays and beaches to be viewed and beautiful views of the historical Waihi village and waterfall. The bird life is prolific and just drifting quietly your senses are assailed by Tui, Bell birds and a myriad of other bird and insect sounds. Times can be negotiated but the minimum is two hours wharf to wharf. This includes a stop for complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. Light meals can be supplied on request.
